About

J. Daniel LopezMr. Lopez’s practice focuses primarily on the representation of artists and entities in the area of music, film, television and new technologies, specifically, the drafting and  negotiating of various agreements.  These agreements include: recording, publishing and merchandising agreements; manager and music producer agreements; film and television agreements for producers, directors and actors; distribution agreements; and small business agreements dealing with partnership and employee non-compete issues.  Mr. Lopez also handles the intellectual property rights of his clients, including researching, registering and protecting copyrights and trademarks.

Mr. Lopez’s passion for entertainment law comes from his background in the entertainment industry.  While in high school Mr. Lopez participated in theater programs, where he was given the opportunity to act, dance and rap.  During this time he also began writing and producing his own music.  After high school he left Albuquerque, New Mexico to attend college in Ohio where he majored in media technology, learning studio engineering and film.  Desiring to earn a business degree, Mr. Lopez returned to New Mexico, taking business, music and film classes.  It was during his time at the University of New Mexico that he founded an entertainment company, Emony Entertainment.  The company was an outlet for him to promote shows, perform, produce music and create dance mixes for various dance groups.

Shortly after earning his business degree, Mr. Lopez moved to Los Angeles, focusing on establishing a record label division for Emony Entertainment. Under his direction, the label released compilation albums and “mixtapes” of emerging artists.  Mr. Lopez was responsible for the legal aspects of the label, such as drafting and negotiating contracts, and filing copyrights and trademarks.

Mr. Lopez’s interests in the legal aspects of Emony Entertainment eventually led him to pursue a legal education at Southwestern Law School.  While attending Southwestern, he tailored his legal education to the entertainment industry by enrolling in entertainment law courses offered by the Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute.  These included Copyright Law, Trademark Law, Motion Picture Production Law, Financing and Distribution of Independent Films, Music Industry Contracts and Video Game Contracts to name a few.  Mr. Lopez also spent a summer in London studying International Entertainment and Sports Law.
